What to consider when choosing the number of strings for a BMS

The number of strings in a BMS (Battery Management System) depends on a number of factors, mainly including:

1. Battery chemistry type and number of cells:

 – The string count of the BMS is directly related to the number of cells in series in the battery pack. Different battery chemistry types (e.g., lithium iron phosphate, ternary materials, etc.) and cell counts determine the total voltage of the pack, which in turn affects the string count of the BMS design. For example, some BMS products can support any cell chemistry from 6 to 32 strings.

2. Application areas and requirements:

 – Different application areas have different demands on the number of battery strings. For example, e-bikes and e-motorcycles may require a different number of strings than electric vehicles or energy storage systems. Some BMS products can support a specific range of string counts, such as 10-16S or 14-24 strings.

3. Technical specifications and features:

– The technical specifications of a BMS will specify the range of strings it supports. For example, some BMS models can support battery management systems with 3~15 strings or 20 strings.

4. Hardware architecture:

 – The hardware architecture of the BMS also affects the number of strings. Some BMSs use a master-slave architecture, where every 15 strings is a battery collection unit, and such a design can be flexibly expanded to support a larger number of strings.

5. Rated discharge current and battery type:

– The number of strings of a BMS is also related to its rated discharge current and battery type. For example, some BMS products can support battery systems with a maximum discharge current of 50A or 100A.

6. Equalization method:

– The equalization method of the BMS (e.g., passive equalization or active equalization) also affects its string count design. Different equalization methods have different requirements on the string count and performance of the BMS.

7. Product model:

 – Different product models will have different string count specifications. For example, some BMS product models such as TKB-BMS-MOS can support battery systems from 6 to 32 strings.

In summary, the number of strings in a BMS depends on a variety of factors such as battery chemistry type, number of cells, application requirements, technical specifications, hardware architecture, equalization method, and product model. When selecting a BMS, the appropriate number of strings needs to be determined based on the specific battery system requirements and application scenarios.
